Phase 2 (2023–2025) – “The Future is Green” Project
Project Value: £7.1M
As part of the ambitious “The Future is Green” initiative, Phase 2 focused on expanding the college’s low-carbon energy infrastructure. This included the extension of the heating and cooling network to the Link and Library Buildings, complete with fully insulated reroofing, upgraded glazing, new plant decks, and additional heat pumps.
A highly detailed digital twin was developed using thermal, hydraulic, and control logic simulations. This virtual model allowed the team to test and optimise the proposed system in a simulated environment — ensuring both capital cost efficiency and maximised energy savings.
Key achievements:
-
Optimised hybrid heating scheme for the main building, reducing gas running costs by 85%
-
Predicted 77% reduction in annual gas consumption
-
Lowered system heating temperatures from 72°C to 50°C
-
On track to achieve over 90% decarbonisation upon project completion
The college is already experiencing significant energy savings, thanks to ongoing performance optimisation through the digital twin.

Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) – University Hospitals Birmingham (2023)
Project Value: £15M
Twelvetrees was appointed as the Principal Sustainability Consultant and Decarbonisation Support Advisor for a major £15 million heat decarbonisation initiative across three hospital schemes within the University Hospitals Birmingham estate.

The project focused on the retrofitting of heat pumps to reduce reliance on fossil fuel-based heating and improve long-term energy efficiency.
Our contributions included:
-
Expert guidance on low-carbon system design
-
Digital twin support for system validation and performance optimisation
-
Preparation for condition compliance and audit-readiness to meet PSDS funding criteria
By applying our expertise in digital modelling and sustainable design, we supported the delivery of a resilient, future-ready solution that aligns with NHS Net Zero targets.
Liverpool City Region Combined Authority (2021–2022)
Twelvetrees was engaged by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority to support its commitment to achieving net zero. Acting as Principal Sustainability Consultant, we provided strategic modelling and advisory services to map a practical and data-driven route to zero carbon emissions.

We also led the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) delivery for the Merseytravel HQ, overseeing the design and implementation of low-carbon retrofit solutions within the existing building infrastructure.

Key contributions:
-
Strategic net-zero pathway modelling and emissions forecasting
-
Oversight and coordination of decarbonisation measures at Merseytravel HQ
-
Alignment with PSDS funding requirements and compliance standards
This project demonstrated a collaborative and outcomes-focused approach to decarbonising public sector buildings, while laying a robust foundation for future climate action across the city region.
